History of the Festival Over years of tradition Lisdoonvarna, the location of the world-famous matchmaking festival, developed into a tourist centre more than a century ago when a top Limerick surgeon discovered the beneficial effects of its mineral waters. People travelled from near and far to bathe in and drink the mineral waters. Rich in iron, sulphur and magnesium, the waters were reputed to give relief from the symptoms of diseases like rheumatism and glandular fever.
The Spa Hotel was the centre around which the village developed.

Ballyvaughan 48km from Galway: Further on the winding coastal road and you end up in Ballyvaughan that is situated on the edge of the Burren. The ancient Cahermore Ring fort has 9ft high walls and is located south of Ballyvaughan. One of the main attractions around is the Aillwee Caves, 4km south of Ballyvaughan. These caves used to contain bears and their bones are now on view in this underground cavern. The cave has waterfalls,stalagmites and stalactites hanging and growing.

His passion is to help hopeful singles, of all ages and nationalities, find a life partner and have a lot of fun on the way. This was the nineteenth century, and houses had no electricity or running water. There were no motor cars and the matchmaking was conducted at horse fairs or cattle fairs or at weddings, and even funerals.

The spa official opened in , but the town was visited before by people partaking of the waters. Even by the s, however, the facilities were quite primitive. The wells were privately owned, by the Guthrie family. The wells were later developed and baths built by the new owner, a Dr. Westropp, who lived in a house overlooking the spa. A detachment of the Royal Irish Constabulary defended the house and its owner and there was heavy fighting in and around the house.

Coming from the Irish “Lios Dhuin Bharna” meaning the lios or enclosure of the fort in the gap, there is plenty of archaeological interest surrounding Lisdoonvarna with many ring forts dating back to the Iron Age and Christian era to be found in the area. However, Lisdoonvarna is best known for its Spa Centre and its festivals.

The day itself may be called either Laa Luanistyn or Laa Luanys. It was similar to the Ancient Olympic Games and included ritual athletic and sporting contests, horse racing , music and storytelling, trading, proclaiming laws and settling legal disputes, drawing-up contracts, and matchmaking. Carman is also believed to have been a goddess, perhaps one with a similar tale as Tailtiu.
She concluded that the evidence testified to the existence of an ancient festival around 1 August that involved the following: Pilgrims climbing Croagh Patrick on “Reek Sunday”.
